Acoustic Research AR 3 vintage Bookshelf Speaker audition mid 1960s all alnico drivers

Copyright www.HiFiTown.com - A brief demo of an original Acoustic Research 3 (not A). This unit from the mid to late 1960s and utilizes all alnico components. Demo is only a moderate volume requiring no more than 2 to 5 watts at any time. This is not the earliest version, rather a Gen 2 incarnation, using particle board outer rather than ply or lumber core. The Gen 2 models of the original 3 date from mid 1960s...to about 1967/68 or so. It's the middle era for the AR-3 line, still early before the later 3a model. These woofers (all cloth edge - not foam) are all the medium-heavy ALNICO type. AR's phenolic midrange is the source of "magic" that makes this speaker system truly great at voicing and realism. Tube amps with 20-30 watts per channel - sound wonderful, as will any solid state on these excellently balanced 3 way units. Common complaints include troublesome control pots, bad driver leads and the artificial bass "hump" the box has at around 100 cycles.
