Know The Different Types Of Wall Paneling
Home improvement literally knows no limits. Every year homeowners get to hear of dozens of home improvement options available to exploit. Among one of the best additions to this pool is the use of panels on walls as an architectural element in both residential and commercial buildings. In this trend, a single piece of flat material such as wood is usually cut into rectangular shape and installed as the visible and exposed covering for a wall. This is usually done not just to improve the building's aesthetic appeal but also to improve its functionality. The required material can be found in specialty stores as well as hardware stores.
Types Of Paneling
There are several different types of wall paneling one can find in today's market. These are mainly classified according to the intended purpose. They include:
1. Decorative: This is done using a variety of attractive looking materials such as wainscot, so as to improve the appearance of the wall. Wainscot is usually made from either wood or synthetic materials and decorated with carvings and designs. Decorative wall panels are usually installed on the lower half of the wall, although the exact height may vary. They usually come pre-fabricated or one can opt to make their own. Other commonly used materials are stainless steel, plastic and laminate.
2. Utility: Here the material is made from perforated hardboard and is used both or functionality and looks. It contains tiny holes which may be used to hang objects using nails or pegs. It is common in garages and kitchens as well as commercial buildings.
3. Tileboard: This makes use of panels made from resin or melamine which are textured and colored to resemble ceramic tiles, which are attached to a moisture-proof backerboard. They are preferred due to their affordability and the fact that they do not have grout lines, making them easy to clean.
4. Structural: This can also be done on the exterior using pre-cast concrete for easy and quick framing of homes and business premises.
Another form is acoustical wall paneling where the structures are used to control noise levels or block noise from passing through walls. Such panels are made from wood or foam and wrapped in a layer of vinyl or fabric. Such are common in schools, hotel rooms and auditoriums.
Benefits Of Decorative Paneling
Paneling is increasingly becoming a popular trend much because of its versatility. Decorative wall panels for instance are not just limited to improving the appearance of a building. Aside from increasing visual appeal:
• They also help to preserve the interior surfaces. This helps to cut down on unnecessary maintenance costs.
• They are much easier to clean since most are glossy, and do not need any repainting from time to time.
In case you are searching for interior or exterior decoration options, this doesn't sound like a bad idea.
Wall paneling simply refers to the addition of segmented pieces of materials to walls for different reasons. Decorative wall panels for instance serve to improve the appearance of a building.

Soundproofing Your Fence
Building a soundproof or noise control fence is relatively easy. Soundproofing a redwood or cedar fence is always the best and those are the type of fences we will be talking about in this article.
If you are constructing a new fence, the first order of business would be to set the posts in concrete footers. Once the 4" X 4" posts are set in concrete then you would nail in the 2" X 4" cross members. Now you have a complete fence structure and you are ready to install the Mass loaded vinyl. Mass loaded vinyl is a high-grade vinyl that is impregnated with barium salts and silica to give it mass. The MLV comes in rolls and is generally 4' or 4 ½' wide on the roll. The weight of the MLV is either 1 Lb per sq ft or 2Lbs per sq ft.
The vinyl would be stapled or nailed to the fence structure. It is best to use a plastic cap stapler for this application, but an in industrial stapler or nail gun would work. I recommend that that you install the MLV horizontally like a membrane across the fence structure. I always recommend over lapping the MLV wherever possible. The next step is very important, you will want to caulk all seams and all over lapped areas as well as caulking around the perimeter of the MLV membrane with acoustical caulking. This helps to seal all seams and maintains the STC value of the MLV at the seams and over lapped areas.
Once the MLV is attached and sealed, it is recommended that the fence slats be nailed up directly over top of the MLV membrane. This will help to protect the vinyl from the elements. For the aesthetic look many people will apply slats to both sides of the fence. This helps to protect the MLV for the weather and also gives the fence a refined look on both sides.
If you already have a sturdy redwood or cedar fence constructed, then it is just a matter of stapling up the MLV membrane to the existing fence and caulking all of the seams as well as the perimeter with the acoustical caulk. Once the MLV membrane is sealed, it is recommended that you once again slat over top of the MLV to protect it from the elements. The MLV is a weatherproof material, but anything over time and exposure will degrade, by adding slats to cover the MLV you protect it from the weather and it will last for many years to come.
Finally, some of my clients have used a combination of the MLV and a product called America mat closed cell foam on the inside of their noise control fences. The America mat adds sound absorption as well as sound blocking to the fence. The America mat will add to the cost of your fence but it will also help with the soundproofing.
